Plenty of arts and crafts featured at Got to Be NC Festival
FiberFest and Bluegrass Band Competition on tap for the weekend
RALEIGH -- At this year’s Got to Be NC Festival, there will be even more ways for visitors to participate. For the first time, the Carolina FiberFest will hold competitions for hand-woven skeins of fiber and handmade garments. Ribbons will be awarded for each category and the competitions are open to anyone, said Carolyn Beasley, Carolina FiberFest coordinator.
“There are so many ways that people interested in fiber arts can participate this year, and the competitions are just one of the new wrinkles,” Beasley said. “We’ll have classes, demonstrations, guest speakers and popular authors of fiber craft books.”
The FiberFest will be held in the Jim Graham Building this year, allowing the group to more than double its classes, demonstrations and market offerings, Beasley said.
On Saturday, May 21, from 1-3 p.m., visitors can meet knitting and crochet magazine and book authors Katie Boyette, Lisa Shroyer and Marcy Smith. All three women live in North Carolina. Boyette is the author of KnitWit: 20 Projects for Beginners and Seasoned Knitters. Shroyer is the editor of Knitscene Magazine and author of Knitting Plus: Mastering Fit +Plus-size Style + 15 Projects. Smith is the editor of Interweave Crochet and has been crocheting since she was 8 years old.
FiberFest hours are Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. To see more about FiberFest, including class schedules, go to www.carolinafiberfest.org.
The Bluegrass Band Competition will be held Saturday, May 21, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Dorton Triangle Stage. Eight bands are slated to compete for bragging rights. The bands are Bethesda Bluegrass Band of Durham; Bridgeton of Asheboro; Burroughs Brothers Bluegrass Express of Randleman; C&J Bluegrass of Mebane; Clear River Bluegrass of Fuquay-Varina; Passin Thru of Ramseur; Smith Family Band of Robbins and Supper Break of Raleigh.
The winning band will receive $500, the second-place band earns $250 and the third-place band takes home $125 in prize money.
